Sometimes there is a fine line between genres of music, and this can expand to include their makers as well. Johnny Cash is a rock musician, but the modern interpretation of country may include him. Avril Lavigne was both rock and pop music – is it obvious yet what music I enjoy most?
Well, in any case, my point stands: Striking Copper, described as a roots-rock duo and comprised of sisters Allie and Jacquie Lee, feels far more like a folk band in their single “Winter.”
The song is, surprisingly, very literally about wintertime, with lines saying “I hope that we don’t have school tomorrow,” and “I’ll sit by my window as (the snow) piles high.” The instrumentation is very cozy, feeling similar to the acoustic or unplugged sessions that some musicians will release to complement their original work. This seems to be its downfall.
“Winter” feels too slow for its own good – like an acoustic version of a song that was never written. Folk music is all well and good when it’s slow, but in the long run, it brings a sluggishness to the sentimentality of the song that is just unnecessary.
An argument could be made that this is simply Striking Copper’s style, but it really isn’t. “A Trip Around the Sun”, a song about heartbreak and moving on from past relationships, moves forward at a fast clip and has more life to it than “Winter” and certainly kept my attention more than the latter piece.
What “Winter” reminds me most of are the pseudo-Christmas songs that are released alongside holiday tunes to try and compete with said tracks (usually futilely). Or perhaps the thing that turns me off from this song is that I feel that the premise of a winter day full of fun and excitement has been done before and with far more energy.
It may not be fair to compare Justin Robert’s “Snow Day” to “Winter,” but that is certainly where my mind goes, and personally, I believe that Roberts tackled the feeling better than
Striking Copper.
I will also state again that I do not feel that Striking Copper are bad musicians or songwriters – I do genuinely enjoy “A Trip Around the Sun,” but I do not think that “Winter” quite hits the mark.
There is a sense that perhaps this song is meant to be about more than just snowy days, but it’s lost in the glitter of freshly fallen snow without much substance.
